Michael Mansfield was born on 12 October 1941 in London and is a renowned British barrister known for his work in high-profile human rights cases. Michael attended Oxford University before becoming a barrister in 1967, and he quickly made a name for himself with his distinctive advocacy and passion for social justice. Michael rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, as he defended members of the Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four and represented families affected by the Hillsborough disaster in 1989. His involvement in the latter highlighted his dedication to securing justice for those affected by systemic failures.
Michael became Queen’s Counsel in 1989 (presently known as the King’s Counsel, KC), further cementing his status as a prominent advocate for civil liberties. By 1999, Michael had built a reputation for his legal skills and outspoken stance on human rights issues. He often defended marginalised groups and challenged state power with the Stephen Lawrence murder in 1993, resulting in the successful conviction of two gang members.
