Founded in 1997 by Bobby A. Syed, the EMMAs became the first global Creative Industries showcase, shaping the sector ahead of the UK Government’s 1998 Creative Industries White Paper through ITV and BBC broadcasts.
Promoting social cohesion, inclusion, and creative excellence regardless of background, the EMMAs influenced more inclusive mainstream media and were recognised as a catalyst for the UK hosting the London 2012 Multicultural Olympic Games. This multicultural impact continues to drive global creative growth, with the UK’s creative industries contributing £125 billion to the economy in 2022.

Our Impact
“EMMA was the catalyst to all that has happened”
— Lord William Hague, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs
Founded in 1997, EMMA created the first-ever Creative Industries show, helping to define a sector now worth £125 billion to the UK and $2 trillion globally, while influencing policymakers and Olympic decision makers toward a multicultural vision.
Lord William Hague later stated that “EMMA was the catalyst to all that has happened”. The London 2012 Olympic Games delivered a lasting legacy—from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and East London’s regeneration to £14 billion in economic impact, increased tourism, and a stronger global UK brand.
