Alicia Keys is a Music Artist who went on to release several albums, including 2003’s The Diary of Alicia Keys, 2007’s As I Am, 2009’s The Element of Freedom, and 2012’s Girl on Fire. In 2023, she wrote, composed and co-produced the Broadway musical, Hell’s Kitchen. She has also appeared in films such as 2007’s Smokin’ Aces, The Nanny Diaries, and 2008’s The Secret Life of Bees. Alicia has sold over 90 million records worldwide, making her one of the world’s best-selling music artists. Billboard named her the Top Artist of the 2000s in the R&B/Hip-Hop category, placing her 10th on their list of the Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of the past 25 Years. Alicia has received numerous accolades in her career, including 16 Grammy Awards, 17 NAACP Image Awards, 12 ASCAP Awards, and an award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and National Music Publishers Association.
Alicia has been recognised for her dedication to humanitarian work, philanthropy, and activism.Alicia co-founded the organisation Keep a Child Alive, which fights against HIV and AIDS, in 2003 and serves as its Global Ambassador. In 2014, Alicia launched the “We Are Here” movement to promote equality, justice, and respect for all people. In 2025, Alicia received the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the Grammys and spoke about the importance of diversity and representation in the music industry, especially for women producers. A modern-day Renaissance woman, Alicia’s dedication to her career and unwavering commitment to her principles have made her a role model for aspiring musicians and activists worldwide.
Background (Before 2002)
Born Alicia Augello Cook, Alicia Keys is an American singer and songwriter who enrolled in the Professional Performing Arts School at the age of 12. There, she took music, dance, and theatre classes and majored in choir.
At the same age, she began composing her songs. A classically trained pianist, she also appeared on The Cosby Show as Maria at age four and was signed by Columbia Records at 15. After disputes with the label, Keys then signed with J Records to release her debut studio album, 2001’s Songs in A Minor.
