Craig David
Since Winning the EMMA Award
Craig David is a British Singer, Songwriter, Rapper, and DJ who has performed at several charity concerts, including the Tsunami Relief Cardiff concert in 2005. The event raised more than £1 million for those affected by the tsunami that hit the Indian Ocean in December 2004. Craig’s experience of being bullied in school led him to write and release the song “Johnny” in 2005. After facing some challenges in the mid-2000s and a brief hiatus from the spotlight, Craig made a remarkable comeback in the 2010s.
His return was marked by the release of the 2016 album “Following My Intuition,” which debuted at No.1 on the UK Albums Chart. During that summer, he made numerous appearances at UK Festivals. This highlighted not only Craig’s enduring talent but also his ability to connect with newer generations of fans, showcasing the timeless appeal of his music. Craig David remains an active figure in the music industry. He tours internationally with his DJ brand TS5 and releases new music, further solidifying his legacy as a UK R&B icon.
Background (Before 2001)
Born to an Afro-Grenadian father who played bass in a reggae band, Ebony Rockers, and an Anglo-Jewish mother, Craig David accompanied his father to a local dance club as a teen, where many DJ’s let him take the microphone. Craig began creating his music and lyrics, and he worked as an MC and DJ in youth and community clubs. After he worked on a cover of ‘Wonderful Tonight’ by Damage, he began working with Artful Dodger, appearing as a vocalist on their tracks ‘Something’ and ‘What Ya Gonna Do’.
Craig started writing and recording his own music, including the songs ‘Walking Away’ and ‘7 Days’. Then he was featured on Artful Dodger’s single ‘Re-Rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta)’, which went to Number 2 and made Craig David a household name. Craig released his debut album, ‘Born to Do It,’ in 2000, which hit No.1 in the UK charts and became 6x Platinum Certified.
