Background (Before 2004)
Mel Gibson was born on 3 January, 1956, in Peekskill, New York. His family moved to Australia when he was 12, where he later studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. Mel rose to fame in the late 1970s and early ’80s with his breakout role as Max Rockatansky in the Mad Max series and cemented his stardom with the Lethal Weapon franchise. Known for his rugged charm and intensity, Mel expanded into directing and producing.
Mel earned widespread acclaim for the 1995 historical epic Braveheart, which won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. By the early 2000s, Mel had become one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. In 2004, Mel directed and financed The Passion of the Christ.
