Ria Lina is a British Comedian, Actress, and Writer who went on to do six shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. These shows tackled topics including autism, motherhood, political correctness, feminism, and racial identity. One of her shows, School of Riason, was nominated for the Amused Moose Laughter Awards and later broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2016. Ria’s other show, Dear Daughter, won the Best Comedy award at the Greater Manchester Fringe, and her other stand-up shows include Taboo Raider, Thpethial, and It’s Not Easy Being Yellow.
Ria’s subsequent TV work includes Jongleurs Live, The World Stands Up, Sweet ‘n’ Sour Comedy, Meet the Blogs, Malai Monologues, the film short Christie, and the documentary A Bit of Oriental. Ria’s TV show appearances include Yesterday Today and the Day Before, Mock the Week, Steph’s Packed Lunch, The Dog Ate My Homework, Talk Radio, Talk Radio Europe, The Now Show, The News Quiz, Richard Osman’s House of Games and Breaking the News.
Ria is the only Filipina comedian in British stand-up and was named one of The Evening Standard’s ‘Hottest Comedians You Should Be Watching Now’ in 2021. Since 2022, Ria Lina has appeared as a guest co-host of The Bugle podcast and is currently a regular pundit on Sky News, BBC News, and Times Radio. She is well known for her scientific insight, confident delivery, political satire, and biting wit.
Background (Before 2003)
Ria Lina is a British comedian whose mother is from the Philippines, and her father is from Germany, which makes her mixed-heritage. Ria attended an American school in the Netherlands from the age of 14 and earned a BSc in pathology from the University of St Andrews, an MSc in forensic science from London South Bank University, and a PhD in virology from University College London.
