He starred in a series of high-grossing and culturally resonant films that showcased both his range and star power. Will headlined action-packed franchises like 2003’s Bad Boys II, 2020’s Bad Boys for Life, and Bad Boys 2024’s “Ride or Die.” Will also delivered emotionally rich performances in 2006’s The Pursuit of Happyness, where he starred opposite his real-life son Jaden and earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

Will’s commanding presence continued in 2007’s I Am Legend, a post-apocalyptic thriller that became one of the decade’s biggest hits, and 2008’s Hancock, a subversive superhero film that demonstrated his knack for redefining genres. Will balanced box office dominance with nuanced storytelling in 2008’s Seven Pounds and later returned to fan-favorite roles in 2012’s Men in Black 3, drawing on nostalgia while pushing the franchise forward. Beyond acting, Will grew his production company, Overbrook Entertainment (and later Westbrook Inc.), into a powerhouse of inclusive, high-quality storytelling across film, television, and digital platforms.

Will has embraced social media with remarkable success, launching a wildly popular YouTube channel in 2017 with 10.8 million subscribers. This channel, which blended humor, philosophy, and adventure, helped to reshape the image of Hollywood celebrities in the digital age. In 2021, Will delivered a career-defining performance in King Richard, portraying the visionary father of Venus and Serena Williams. This performance earned him critical acclaim and his first Academy Award (Oscars) for Best Actor. That same year, Will released his bestselling memoir Will, offering an introspective look at his journey, philosophies, and evolution as an artist and individual. Through his multifaceted career, Will Smith has remained a trailblazer in entertainment, a cultural icon whose charisma, ambition, and creative influence continue to inspire audiences worldwide.

Background (Before 2001)

Will Smith was born in Philadelphia in 1968, and rose from being a charismatic West Philly kid to one of the most influential entertainers of his generation. Will first found fame in the late 1980s as one half of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, earning the first Grammy ever awarded in the rap category in 1989. His clean, upbeat style made rap accessible to mainstream audiences, helping bring hip-hop into suburban homes.

Will’s charm translated seamlessly to television when The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air debuted in 1990, becoming a cultural touchstone that blended comedy with serious social commentary and cemented his image as a lovable, quick-witted everyman. Transitioning to film in the mid-1990s, Will evolved into a bona fide box office star with blockbuster hits like 1996’s Independence Day, 1997’s Men in Black, and 2001’s Ali that went on to win the EMMA Multicultural Award, for which he earned his first Oscar nomination.

By 2002, Will had established himself as a rare triple threat—a musician, actor, and cultural icon who reshaped Hollywood’s image of a Black leading man. He exuded both universal appeal and authentic swagger while consistently dominating music charts, television screens, and the silver screen.
