Background
Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States, serving from 1953 to 1961. His presidency was marked by a steadfast commitment to global peace, achieved through strategic diplomacy, military restraint, and innovative policies.
Shortly after taking office, Dwight prioritised ending the Korean War, which had been at a stalemate. His administration negotiated an armistice in July 1953, effectively halting hostilities and maintaining the division of Korea along the 38th parallel.
In December 1953, Dwight delivered his “Atoms for Peace” speech to the United Nations, advocating for the peaceful use of nuclear energy. This initiative led to the establishment of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and promoted the sharing of nuclear technology for non-military purposes, aiming to reduce the threat of nuclear proliferation.
Dwight hosted the Geneva Summit in July 1955, bringing together leaders from the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and France. The summit focused on reducing Cold War tensions, discussing issues such as arms control, trade barriers, and nuclear warfare.
Dwight proposed the “Open Skies” policy, suggesting mutual aerial surveillance to promote transparency and trust among nations.
Dwight Eisenhower’s legacy in promoting global peace is characterised by his strategic diplomacy, advocacy for nuclear disarmament, and efforts to contain the spread of extremist political ideologies through peaceful means.
