Background
Kofi Annan was born on 8th April 1938, in Kumasi, Ghana. He was a distinguished diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006. His tenure was marked by significant contributions to global peace and security.
Kofi’s leadership was pivotal in revitalising the UN, emphasising human rights, and advocating for the Millennium Development Goals.
He played a central role in establishing the UN’s first ever counter-terrorism strategy and the “responsibility to protect” doctrine, which commits the international community to prevent atrocities like genocide and war crimes.
After his UN tenure, Kofi founded the Kofi Annan Foundation in 2007, focusing on promoting better global governance and strengthening capacities to achieve a fairer, more peaceful world.
He chaired the Africa Progress Panel, advocating for equitable and sustainable development in Africa, and led the Global Commission on Elections, Democracy, and Security, emphasising the importance of electoral integrity for global stability.
In 2001, Kofi and the United Nations were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work in fostering a better organised and more peaceful world.
